Wedding Party Attire

Groom's Attire
A handsome and well-dressed groom is as essential at a wedding as is a beautiful bride! The groom's attire should be based on the style of the wedding, the hour of the wedding, the size of the wedding party and the season.

First choices include the cutaway coat for formal morning weddings, the stroller coat for less formal daytime weddings and the black tuxedo for evening weddings. Click here for a Groom's Glossary.

Groomsmen's Attire
Choices for the groom should also apply to the groomsmen, ushers and fathers of the bridal couple. A specialist should measure every man. Out-of-town formalwear shops will take the measurements for the men in the wedding party who live elsewhere.

Formalwear shops prefer that the men try on their tuxedos when they pick them up, and also check for the necessities: cufflinks, studs, cummerbunds, bow ties, ascots, and shoes.

Bridesmaids' Attire
Etiquette decrees that you select an elegant floor-length gown for your attendants if you are having a formal wedding. At other times, your bridesmaids can wear a variety of lengths, though the dresses should not be longer than the bride's dress. Beyond length recommendations, you are free to choose whatever type of dress appeals to your fashion flair. Color is usually the beginning point because your bridesmaids' dresses determine the color scheme. Pastel or floral are spring and summertime favorites, while jewel tones are favorite wintertime choices.

Flower Girl's Attire
Flower girl fashion has changed very little through the years. Keep in mind the style of your ceremony, and match the flower girl dress to that style. Her dress can be short or long, and of different silhouettes, depending on her age. It can be either white, like the bride's, or the same color as the bridesmaids' dresses.
Ring Bearer's Attire
The ring bearer can look like a miniature groomsman. Depending on his age, tuxedos are available for rent. Or he can don a velvet, satin or linen suit. For those little guys too small for suits, look for a 4-piece set including pants, a dress shirt, a vest and a matching bow tie.
